“Song of the Little Death” by Federico García Lorca, recited by Lorenzo Varela (recorded in 1965 by Nelson Montes-Bradley for Discos Qualiton / Juglaría LP QH-2001).

“I put two bullets in his ass for being a faggot” is a sentence attributed by historians to Juan Luís Trescastro, who was part of the group that executed García Lorca along with two other civilians. According to sources, he was heard the next morning around the cafés bragging about killing the poet with sentences like this one.

“The faggot with the bowtie” was a nickname given to García Lorca by some of his enemies in the more conservative circles in Granada, as he would often be seen wearing a bowtie.

SONG OF THE LITTLE DEATH

Mortal field of moons
and underground blood.
Field of ancient blood.

Light of yesterday and today.
Mortal sky of grass.
Light and night of sand.

I came face to face with deat.
Mortal field of soil.
A little death.

The dog on the roof.
My left hand alone
crossed unending hills
of dry flowers.

Cathedral of ash.
Light and night of sand.
A little death.

A death and I, a man.
A man alone, and her
a little death.

Mortal field of moons.
The snow moands and trembles
on the other side of the door.

A man, ¿what else? As I said.
A man alone, and her.
Meadow, love, light and sand.

-Federico García Lorca
